New England Metal and Hardcore Festival: 4/26

I managed to make it over to the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival in Worcester yesterday. Unfortunately they were sold out of day tickets by the time I showed and we instead grabbed a few drinks at Irish Times across the street.
Irish Times was an your average sports bar, although I was told it [...]

Under-cutting the loft

I had intended to spend most of my day at working listening to Dotan U.S.’s Loft Classics, Vol. 1- but found myself consistently sidetracked.
According to this website Loft Classics is a mix of songs frequently played at exclusive parties thrown by a guy named David Mancuso that went on to influence many a DJ. The [...]

Day’s Update 4/23/08

I was pretty excited since I just made it home from work not even 15 minutes ago, when I opened my mail and received a new copy of The New Yorker. I hung it over the trash in my kitchen to shake out the subscription cards when I noticed a black and white photo of [...]

Side Notes: 4/22/08

-In keeping with yesterdays post, The Love Unlimited has a nice piece of spaced out 80’s synth entitle “R.E.R.B.” by a group called Shock.
-Captin’s Crate/Soul-Sides had a review of a few recently compilation albums, including the Psychedelic/Garage compilation Obsession which I picked up the other day. I’ve been looking for the Nigeria Special: Modern Highlife, Afro-Sounds & Nigerian [...]

Record Store Day

Surprise- today is officially (not recognized by the US government, but according to this website that looks like someone put time and money into it) Record Store Day.
And for a double surprise- no record stores in Boston are celebrating it except Newbury Comics, tourist trap of the teenage identity crisis.
At least its independently owned.
What a shit town.

Morgan Geist – Unclassics

Morgan Giest’s Unclassics was apparently an italo disco gem that totally passed me by. Released in 2004 under Environ, its a mix along the lines of I-F’s Mixed up in the Hague Vol 1. I’m not sure which one I really like better, so it’ll have to suffice to say that they are different.
Unclassics contains [...]

Art Fever

About two years ago I was turned onto Dengue Fever. An L.A. based garage psych band with an real life Cambodian (really? Cambodian? wow!) woman as their lead singer (and main hipster attention grabber) through their 2005 release Escape From Dragon House. That album had a lot of character, the songs from it felt thought out [...]

Music Review: Wild Billy Childish & the Blackhands – Play: Capt’n Calypso’s Hoodoo Party

I stumbled into Billy Childish via Holly Golightly whose song Nothing You Can Say off of God Don’t Like It was stuck in my head for a few weeks in my freshman year of college when I was attracted to her Patsy Cline like vocals.
I promptly forgot about her until I came across a Greenhornes [...]

Why You Should Never Buy Dynex Products

I recently purchased a Dynex All-in-1 Memory Card Reader from Best Buy.
First thing that went wrong:
The item came with a small CD (not one of the full sized ones, but one approximately the size of a game cube disc) which contained the drivers. I own a macbook pro so I was unsure if this would [...]
